About
This is an early version of John Wolstencroft’s Quest, not the one Kuma released. The released game is in the library as Castle Quest & Quest.
It was found on a plain, hand-labelled disc that turned up in a Kuma Castle Quest case, beside the early version of Castle Quest and demonstration copies of Quadrax and Pelmanism dated 16 April 1984. Its title screen reads “FANTASY QUEST, BY JOHN WOLSTENCROFT, COPYRIGHT (C) 1982,1983 and 1984”.
How It Differs
The adventure is the same, but this version is plainer than the one Kuma released:
- There is no instructions screen, and no
HELPcommand during play. The end-of-game prompt is just “Play or end game?”. - Several of the release’s sound effects are missing.
- It keeps spelling slips that the release corrected, such as “You anter the room of Myrrh”.
- Its start-up line sets the machine up for demonstration.
Running It
The disc image holds just this program and boots XtalDOS. XBAS.COM is not on it; with XBAS available, type XBAS QUEST.
