help preserve the einstein

Share Your Disc Images

If you have Einstein discs, you hold a piece of the machine's history that may exist nowhere else. Imaging them and sharing the images with us is a real favour: every disc helps keep the Einstein's software alive and brings more of it to the people who still love the machine. There is no account to make, nothing is published without being looked at by hand, and a disc that turns up something new gets its story told here, with your name on it if you like.

Your name (optional) Email (optional, so we can tell you what we found) Where the discs came from Some of these were personal discs and may hold letters, names or addresses You may credit me on the site if a disc turns up something I have the right to share these images, and I understand TatungBytes may host the recovered software with any personal data removed Your images go into a private folder here, not onto the site. We look at every disc by hand before anything is published, and we are grateful for every one.

Why It Matters

Einstein software survives only on the discs people kept. Every image shared here is a piece of the machine's history saved for good, and the finds it turns up go straight back to the community, with your name on them if you would like that. It is a genuine favour to TatungBytes and to everyone who still cares about the Einstein.

How to Make an Image

With nothing but a Gotek. The Einstein's own BACKUP command writes a .DSK straight onto the USB stick. The guide Dump a Disc With Nothing but a Gotek has the seven steps and the blank image to write into.

With a Greaseweazle. Reading the flux is the only way to keep a copy protected original. See Dumping Your Own Einstein Discs with a Greaseweazle, then send the .SCP, .MFI and .DSK from its dump folder.

What Helps Most

Up to 40 files at a time: .DSK, .MFI or .SCP.
Flux files up to 24 MB each; email us anything bigger.
Name each file after the disc label if you can.
Any disc at all, including ones you are sure we already have: the interesting finds are in the sectors the directory does not show.

Each file is checked here in your browser before it goes anywhere, so you can see straight away that it is a good image.
