This is the earliest known build of the Keyboard Trainer, one of the programs Tatung wrote in house for the Einstein and shipped on the TC01 System Master disc. It is version V009, dated 18 June 1984, by Nigel Deakin, and it predates the copy in our archive: the TC01 System Master Disc we hold carries the later V010, dated 21 October 1984.
Like its companion Hangman, it was recovered as a deleted file from a second-hand, non-commercial disc - a reused copy of the commercial adventure Cursed Chambers - using the new einstein_dsk_recover in Einstein Disc Tools. On the Einstein a deletion only changes one byte of the directory, so the program survived intact on the disc, and came back byte for byte.
The whole recovered set is dated to mid-June 1984, earlier than any master we hold, so these builds may have come from an earlier System Master, possibly the v1.0 we are still looking for.
The download is a standard Einstein .dsk holding KEYBOARD.XBS, an Xtal BASIC program rather than a bootable disc. Boot a System Master or an XtalDOS disc with Xtal BASIC, mount this disc as drive 1, then LOAD "1:KEYBOARD" and RUN.
