About

The programs from the final Einstein User, June 1988, on one bootable Xtal BASIC disc.

The WF suite is a complete word processor in nine chained parts. Text is typed and edited in a fast machine code editor, then printed proportionally spaced with a justified right margin, or at 10, 12 or 15 characters per inch, with centred and underlined headings, rules, an address block and envelopes, and your texts kept on disc. The control characters for centring, underlining and rules sit on the function keys. Pages 18 to 26.

Philip Lord's Shape Definer lets you draw a 16 by 16 sprite on a large grid with Q, A and the arrow keys, see it as a sprite at any magnification, and read the four SHAPE strings off the screen to paste into your own program. It is here with the one line fix it needed to read the grid back, alongside the listing as printed. Pages 12 to 13.

Running them

Boot the disc, type XBAS, then LOAD "WF" and RUN. F0 ends text entry. WF wants a second drive for its text files.

What is in the download

A zip holding the disc as a DSK, the same disc as an MFI for MAME to write to, the listings as BASIC text and as tokenised Xtal BASIC, and a README.

Verified

Run in MAME 0.289 with Xtal BASIC 4.2 and MOS 1.2. WF was taken through text entry, review, writing and reading a file on drive 1, tabs and the fixed pitch print set up, though the printing itself needs a printer; its two machine code blocks match the checksums the magazine prints. As printed, the Shape Definer always reads back an empty sprite, because its fill prints a space and POINT cannot see one; the corrected copy reads back exactly what was drawn. Not run on real hardware.

The scanned issue is on this site as Tatung Einstein User Vol.4.No.2.
