The programs from Einstein User's March 1987 issue, on one bootable Xtal BASIC disc.
Gerry Miles's Get Your Functions Functioned fills all sixteen function keys with text and control codes from a screen editor, then writes a small .COM file that loads them back from the DOS prompt, so any disc can carry its own key set. Pages 18 to 19.
Histogram Generator, by fifteen year old Oriol Marti Ribas of Barcelona, draws a three dimensional bar chart from your figures, by month or by up to 25 bars, positive only or above and below zero. Pages 20 to 21.
Wordfile, by A.J. Wilson of Canvey Island, is a complete small word processor: write, edit by screen, line or column, save and load text, and print with Epson styles, margins, page length, an addressed heading and envelopes. Pages 22 to 25.
Running them
Boot the disc, type XBAS, then LOAD "FKEYS", LOAD "HISTGRAM" or LOAD "WORDFILE" and RUN. Wordfile saves to drive 1, so it wants a second drive.
What is in the download
A zip holding the disc as a DSK, the same disc as an MFI for MAME to write to, the listings as BASIC text and as tokenised Xtal BASIC, and a README.
Verified
Run in MAME 0.289 with Xtal BASIC 4.2 and MOS 1.2. The function key program set two keys and wrote its loader, and after a reboot that loader restored them and F0 typed and ran DIR; its 44 bytes of machine code in DATA assemble from the printed source. The histogram drew both kinds of chart. Wordfile wrote, edited, saved to drive 1, reloaded and inserted text, though printing was not tried for want of a printer. Two lines of the histogram listing run off the edge of the page in the magazine and are completed here with the only line numbers that fit. Not run on real hardware.
