About

Everything you need to play ZX Spectrum games on a Tatung Einstein TC01 with a Speculator plugged in, and not a Spectrum tape in sight: the Speculator's own software disc, SP1, and 27 game discs holding 81 saved Spectrum games, ready to load. For anyone who does want to load their own tapes, the nine Conversion Disks are in here too.

New to the Speculator? The Speculator Quick Start takes you from switching on to playing Atic Atac.

What Is in the Zip

  • SP1.dsk, Speculator Disc One: SP1, the Speculator's loader, and SPID. It boots to the 0: prompt.
  • Games, 27 discs from ZXdisk01 to ZXdisk27, three saved games on each.
  • Conversion Disks, ConDisk1 to ConDisk9: 117 loaders built from the conversion codes printed in the period books, for loading games from your own tapes. How to use them is in the Conversion Codes and Disks guide.
  • CONTENTS.txt, the list below, with an A to Z index.
  • README.txt, the quick start in brief.

Loading a Game

Boot SP1.dsk, type SP1 at the 0: prompt, and swap to the game disc. Hold F6 and press the game's file number from the table below. Press Y at Load file?, then at Interrupt? press the number the table gives, or 1 if it gives none.

Go by the file number, not by DIR. SP1 finds a game by where it sits on the disc and never looks at the directory. Five discs (04, 14, 17, 21 and 25) show no files at all in DIR, and on ZXdisk05 and ZXdisk27 the names DIR shows are in a different order from the file numbers. The table goes by file number, as SP1 does.

What Is on Each Disc

Interrupt is the answer to SP1's prompt, taken from the Conversion Codes and Disks guide wherever it lists the same game; a blank means it does not, so try 1 and then 2. Every game was named from the save itself, from the screen it was saved on or the title in its memory. Where the title is not in the save, the game is marked (probably) and named after what the person who saved it called it. Four saves carry no title at all and are described instead: if you recognise one, please tell us. Three games appear twice, so there are 78 different games here.

Where These Came From

SP1.dsk is the image preserved by tatungeinstein.co.uk, unchanged. The 27 game discs are the same images this page has always offered, also unchanged; their original notes say all 81 games work. The Conversion Disks were typed in from the period books by Lee Bendall, and were previously attached to his guide.

The disc list was compiled in September 2026 from the saves themselves. Loading was tested in MAME, which emulates the Speculator: SP1 and the games load and show their menus, but some games stop once play begins in MAME 0.289, so play them on a real Speculator.
