About
This is the disc image the site's Turbo Pascal Text Adventure Primer is written against. Mount it in MAME, type TURBO at the 0: prompt, answer Y, and Turbo Pascal 2.00A shows its menu. Or type BEACON and play the game the primer builds.
What Is on It
- TURBO.COM, Borland's Turbo Pascal 2.00A, with its message files: the same copy as on the Turbo Pascal Course Disc, set up for the 40-column screen with DELETE rubbing out one character.
- BEACON.TXT, the game's world as plain text: twelve rooms with their exits, and 27 messages. You read it, you do not type it.
- BEACON.DAT and BEACON.MSG, the same world as typed files of records, made from
BEACON.TXTby MAKEDAT.PAS, which is beside them. - VOCAB.TXT, 121 words in alphabetical order, for the sections on finding a word quickly.
- BEACON.COM, the finished game, and its source, BEACON.PAS.
- 110K of free space, which is where your own programs go.
The Turbo course's game, Warehouse, and the MicroCalc source are not on this disc; they are on the Turbo Pascal Course Disc.
BEACON
A storm, a dark lighthouse, and a ship running for the rocks. Twelve rooms, a handful of things to find and four puzzles, played by typing commands such as TAKE THE LANTERN or OPEN DOOR WITH CROWBAR. Type QUIT to go back to 0:.
Why It Is an .mfi and Not a .dsk
MAME will not write to a .dsk image, so anything you saved would be lost. The .mfi format is MAME's own, and MAME does write to it, so what you save is still there next time.
Using It
Put the file somewhere you can find again and point MAME at it:
mame -rompath ~/roms einstein -flop1 ~/einstein/textadventure.mfi -windowReal Hardware
This image exists for emulation. Nothing on this page has been tried on a real machine.
How It Was Made
It is a copy of the Turbo Pascal Course Disc with Warehouse and MicroCalc taken off and the primer's files added. BEACON.DAT, BEACON.MSG and BEACON.COM were made on the Einstein itself, by MAKEDAT and by Turbo's compiler.
